Supporting learning through safe and responsible AI
At Tom's School, we believe artificial intelligence can be a powerful tool to support learning when it is designed and used responsibly.
Our AI maths tutor is designed to provide personalised explanations, encouragement and practice opportunities while supporting students to build confidence and independence in mathematics.
AI is used as a learning assistant — it does not replace teachers, parents or professional educational support.
Responsible AI design
Tom's School is built with safety and responsible AI principles at its core. We aim to ensure that our AI tutor:
- Provides age-appropriate educational support
- Encourages understanding rather than simply giving answers
- Promotes positive learning habits and confidence
- Avoids inappropriate, harmful or unsafe responses
- Treats students with patience, respect and encouragement
- The platform is designed for educational use only.
Supporting independent learning
The AI tutor is designed to guide students through problems using explanations and questions rather than encouraging dependency. Students are encouraged to develop their own problem-solving skills and mathematical understanding.
Monitoring and improvement
We continuously review our AI systems and user experience to improve safety, accuracy and educational value.
Where appropriate, feedback and learning interactions may be reviewed to improve the quality of the platform while respecting user privacy and data protection requirements.
Transparency with families
We encourage parents and carers to understand how AI is being used and to discuss responsible technology use with their children.
Tom's School aims to provide a safe, supportive environment where students can ask questions, make mistakes and learn with confidence.
Safeguarding Statement
Our commitment to student safety
At Tom's School, safeguarding children and young people is our highest priority.
We are committed to creating a safe digital learning environment where students can access maths support with confidence, knowing that their wellbeing, privacy and safety are valued.
A safe learning environment
Our platform is designed to:
- Provide educational support in a respectful and encouraging way
- Maintain appropriate boundaries between students and technology
- Protect student information through secure systems
- Promote positive online behaviour
- The AI is configured to avoid harmful, abusive or inappropriate content.
- It does not encourage secrecy from parents or carers.
- Students should speak to a trusted adult if they are worried about something.
- If the AI detects discussions suggesting someone may be at risk of harm, it may stop the educational conversation and direct the student to appropriate support.
- Parents can contact Tom's School with concerns about the platform.
AI limitations and supervision
While our AI tutor is designed with safety measures, artificial intelligence is not a replacement for human judgement, teachers, parents or safeguarding professionals.
We encourage parents and carers to remain involved in their child's online learning journey and to discuss safe and responsible use of technology.
Handling concerns
If a student experiences a concerning interaction, believes content is inappropriate, or has a safeguarding concern, they should report this through the contact methods provided on the platform.
All concerns will be taken seriously and reviewed appropriately.
Data protection and security
Tom's School uses secure technology infrastructure, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Entra security features, to help protect user accounts and personal information.
We follow UK data protection principles and are committed to responsible handling of student information.
Our ongoing commitment
As Tom's School develops, we will continue to strengthen our safeguarding approach, review emerging risks associated with AI technology and ensure our platform remains a safe and supportive place for students to learn.
